When I play tug or fetch with my dog she will frequently (majority of the time) win the game of tug or fetch and lie down with the toy and begin chewing on it. I have tried the predator stalking then running away which will get her to tense up and then run with the toy but I can't get her to focus on the other toy I have in hand (everyone once in a while I can). She may go after the other toy somewhat, but then will want the other one, even though I'm hiding it. I had her push into me for the toys a couple of times (now that is a serious push!) to try to get her to come back and looking for another toy as well but nothing seems to be working on a consistent basis. The only way I can resume the game is by walking up to her and grabbing the toy either via a treat exchange or just simply resume tug. What am I doing to create this? Is it too intense? Please let me know your thoughts.

I know this is an old post, but I thought it was worth responding to because I had the same problem. From what I understand is that tearing apart the toy is releasing frustration. What I started to do is incorporate pushing into our tug games, so Jinxsie would tug, win and then push for food. Or, sometimes I will pick the leash up and get her moving again and then get her to push for food or go for my other toy. This has been very effective.

I can get her to come back to me some now as she has gradually been able to take more energy. Before she would run off in bushes and chew, now she will stay fairly close and go after another toy or just lay down and chew on the toy. I'm still working on getting her to come back all the time and I think a slight tug on the leash and food may do the trick but only time will tell.
