Default NDT grumble: No one gets the good boy

Butters and I have started ring training again, I would like him to father pups one day and that one heads up from the DKK is needed for that to happen sadly.

Now we have started with quite a nice group of people BUT. Butters got a bit growly with another male. I rubbed his chest and said, good boy.

Then some crazy woman started yelling across the room about how this encorages him and I should scold him and....... you know the rest.

A short time later, Butters and the other male were sniffing each other happily and all was well. This of course the woman paid no attention to at all.

Can't wait for NDT to be mainstream.

Haha, when my dogs gets ahold of someone's prized possession and I praise him, I get an earful from the peanut gallery. Later, I explain how scolding him is not going to put him in the mood for releasing the item, and that next time he will be sure to take the item when no one is looking, and finish up with it before it is taken away! Still, I think it's in our human concept of right/wrong/crime/punishment, that the dog should be corrected when it does something "wrong."

As I've really come to experience what NDT refers to as the "group-mind", the dog and the person who identifies with it being of one mind, and the dog expressing what is in the person's heart, ie, their true feelings, I am more discriminating about who my dog and I interact with, and less affected by what strangers would think, and also more patient with the dog.

Default what my neighbor thinks

Hi. Yea, we don't know what we don't know. My neighbor has all kinds of opinions about what I'm doing with my dog--she can see my back yard and she's retired and sits outside a lot and sees me come and go on walks. She told me that I'm going to give my dog hip dysplasia from "making him get up on his hind legs like that all the time". Also, that she wasn't sure it was a good idea to be teaching him to jump up on people. So I tried to give her a really simple short basic schpeel about NDT and demonstrated pushing right then and there to point out that his paws don't land on me at all. I informed her that he never jumps up on anyone. I don't think she was paying any attention since her only response was to repeat her same concerns. So I told her I am working with professional dog trainers one of whom used to train police dogs. She didn't really reply to that. Wish I could wear a big placcard with Neil's website address on it when I'm out with my dog since I see people watching me as they drive past. Might be too cumbersome during pushing, however .

Just so you know, my genius ortho/rehab vet instructed me to "doggie dance" and "hup" with Rudy - who HAS hip dysplasia - because it builds core and hip muscle strength So if your dog has imperfect hips - as most dogs do - you are actually helping him!

Well next time I plan to wear my Be the moose T shirt.

That will shut her up

Love the visual of having the neighbouts watch you do NDT with your dog.

Another good one is the looks you get when you are getting into your dogs emotional space, i.e. thats a great smell you found there, wow!!

Lucky for me I live in the country and have a degree of privacy, so I do not have to deal with it often.
