Hi guys,
My house just sold and we're moving to Raleigh! Any of you in the Raleigh, NC area? Any NDT tips on moving? I just spent 3 days with Kevin - wow. He told me to put the dogs on my emotional backburner. What a relief! |

I'm located in Raleigh-- great area to move to especially for a dog owner! We had one heck of a heat wave this summer, so hopefully the autumn will make a nicer introduction. Let me know if you have any questions about the area.

Hi Ben,
Yeah! A NDT type nearby!! We just put a contract on a house by Umstead and I'm so excited I love Raleigh. I've been driving up here 3-4x a year for the last four years to see the most amazing vet - John Sherman at Vethab. Sadly, he died in May...and ironically NOW I move here. And I'm vet-searching. Would you like to meet to walk/train the dogs somewhere? Lou is safe in public now and as long as we're walking and outside he's fine. I need to read back through the blog to see what particular "opportunity" dog brought you here but I think having someone else around who gets it and can help would be really great! I spent a few days with Kevin Behan in August and I'd be happy to show you what I learned. I had no idea how much pressure I was putting on myself, and on Lou, for him to be "perfect" in public until I was around another NDT-er and it was sooooo liberating to know that I/Lou aren't being judged, scorned, feared by that person. And of course a recommendation for a vet would be fabulous!

It'd be cool to meet up some time-- coincidentally I'm going up to Kevin's the first week of October with my dog Nelly. She's very reactive to other dogs and squirrels inside the house, outside, in the car, everywhere. I'm hoping he'll be able to get us on the right track.
For vets, I *highly* recommend Magnolia Animal Hospital off of Capital Blvd. I mainly see Dr. Jon, but all of their vets are top notch. The exam rooms are large, and the staff is very friendly. When my dog Indy passed away in March, they sent me a card signed by all the staff with a personal message from Dr. Jon. Plus, their prices are really good! |

Cool!
You are going to be flat out stunned at what is going to happen to/with you and your pup at Kevin's. And if your dog is dog reactive then that is PERFECT! LOL Once you see what Kevin does with your dog we can compare notes and use each other for training. You'll see why another NDT type person/dog is helpful. Tell him that Lou the Cocker sends bites...I mean kisses

You weren't kidding-- it was an incredible week. I've been reading and practicing NDT for over 2 years, but there were so many new things I learned.. I'd really only scratched the surface up until our visit.
I'm definitely eager to compare techniques and notes, and your thoughts on them. Kevin had fond memories of Lou, and remarked that if Lou and Nelly got along, it'd be a big achievement ![]() I've got Nelly on strict crate -> trolley -> crate duty right now, but after this week I think we'll start venturing out some. Let me know when you'd like to meet up and we can plan something! |

Great! It tooks me weeks to digest a 3 day stint with Kevin. LOL I'd love to hear all about your time up there - it would be a good refresher for me.
When you are ready you suggest a time. I've found a great vacant lot (no foot traffic, little car traffic, out of the way) that is large and mowed grass. There is also a 5 ft brick wall for training and a big power box for box training. I do fetch/tug with Lou there every day. Barking noise wouldn't be a problem. Perhaps that would be a good spot to meet. There is also a little fenced enclosure we could use about a block away. Here's something to inspire hope: my neighbors have 2 dogs . They also have a fence - post and welded wire. Lou has NO interest at all in them - doesn't want to eat them, doesn't snap through the fence, nothing. He does tend to feed off their energy still, if they bark he barks, but that's it. I think I could put him in their yard with them and he'd be fine. They are girls, btw. This is good progress. He still would like to break-bad on unneutered male dogs though LOL But even so, using some of Kevin's tools I'm able to manage it. One day, Lou and Nelly will be running around in a friendly game of chase, flipping polarities like it was nothing
