  1. 50 feet long. Generally the longest leashes that you can find are a mere 30 feet long. 30 feet might seem long enough, but if your dog is bigger than a yorkie they won’t be able to run without quickly reaching the end of the line – which can actually be dangerous.

    I’ve found that 50 feet is a great length, allowing most dogs to experience immense freedom of movement while you hold on to one end. Or if you choose to let the leash drag behind your dog, 50 feet gives you PLENTY of reaction time should your dog decide to chase the neighbor’s cat.
  2. Nylon. Do retailers ever try to use the leashes that they sell? For one thing, most long leashes that you find will be made with cotton. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for renewable resources (it’s just that hemp is so darn expensive!) – but cotton is the WRONG material for a leash.

    Here’s why: Cotton creates a ton of friction when it slides through your hands, which can create serious burns (trust me, I’ve experienced it). Furthermore, as soon as cotton gets wet, it stiffens up. So after you’ve taken one spin on your early-morning-dew-soaked lawn, forget it! That cotton leash becomes a stiff mess of webbing as it dries, making it very difficult to manage.

    Most likely, that stiff cotton leash will simply break the next time your dog gives a strong tug on it.

    The nylon that we use is much smoother and softer (read: less friction as it slides through your hand) and it retains its pliability even after repeated exposure to moisture and the elements.
  3. 1 inch wide. Width matters. Those other leashes that you see that are 5/8 inches thick are much more difficult to manage, especially with any exposure to “weather”. They’re more likely to get tangled and knot up, and give you less to hold onto.

    The 1 inch width of our leashes makes them very easy to grip, much less likely to tangle, and much easier to untie should a knot form in the webbing. Plus it’s STRONGER! Think about it – these leashes are nearly DOUBLE the width of what you’d find elsewhere – an appropriate width that gives you the control you need without becoming unwieldy.

    Amazing Results!

    I’ve been pushing and playing tug with my 1 year old Lab (Aengus) each morning for the past month or so and the results have been tremendous. Before I started using NDT techniques, Aengus would give all of his energy to other dogs but not much to me or my wife.

    Extremely Helpful

    First, I'd like to thank you for the Natural Dog Training DVDs. They are extremely helpful! I especially like the detail on the pushing exercise because I'd tried pushing before with my dog, and he'd balked - I hadn't understood all of the mechanics until I saw you perform the exercise.     A Significant Shift

    I received the DVDs and have watched disc 1. I want to focus on really getting the information from the first disc down before watching the second disc. I'm glad I bought the DVDs as seeing the action really helped me. I'm willing to try anything that falls within my range of "humane" with Tucker and so far, pushing and playing tug (where he always wins) has helped him overall to relax. He was already fairly relaxed (except around the neighbor's dogs) but I'm noticing he's more relaxed in more instances than before. And I'll testify that it's because of the pushing, the massage, and the tugging.

    By the way, this morning, I consciously focused on keeping my own energy relaxed when feeding our 5 house dogs (I feed them all at the same time in the kennel kitchen/office, which is a small space); and as I asked each one to sit or lie down, I massaged them in a relaxing way, and by golly!, I noticed a significant shift. Feeding time can be frenzy time with the assortment we have: a JRT, a Bischon/Poodle mix, a Rottie, deaf Moses, and Tucker (aka the Giant NM Brown Dog), but I've been working on making it more of a quiet time.

    Thinking about a call? Do it!

    If anyone is thinking about scheduling a call with Neil-- DO IT! I had an hour long call with him to discuss my new dog Nelly and some of the issues we'd been dealing with. She was adopted from the local kill shelter and I'd only had her for about 2.5 weeks when we had the call, but I wanted to make sure I had a good understanding of how to implement the techniques and see if I was missing anything before I got too far in.

    Sure enough, on the call Neil was able to determine that I had pretty much neglected incorporating any sort of relaxation into our training. Nelly is very reactive on walks when she sees another dog, a squirrel, etc. She also has a lot of resistance to her crate and has to be physically manipulated into it. I thought it was simply more pushing and more tug to get that energy out, but the key is for her to able to relax WHILE experiencing higher levels of attraction and energy.

    The biggest breakthrough though was that Neil was able to nail down exactly what I felt in the moments when Nelly "freaked" out, and suggested that I could take a different approach. I was all in my head and not "feeling" what Nelly needed during these times, and this was counterproductive to trying to get past these hurdles. It's easy to disregard how much how you feel and think affects training and your relationship, but it is a critical component.

    The call ranged from talking about Nelly to reflecting on how I view relationships with dogs in general. The great thing is that his questions enable you to make your own realizations about what is going on with you and your dog. I thought I had way more than an hour's worth of content, but Neil was able to connect-the-dots and get down to the true "problem".

    It's definitely worth having a call if you've got questions or concerns. I've started to implement what we discussed and it's already making a noticeable difference!

    Highly Recommend a Coaching Session

    As one on one training wasn't an option for me and I don't consider myself a quick study when it come to trying and learn and understand dog training from a book or reading websites articles.
